Need donations for shelter

Posted June 15, 2011

I know in this economy it is hard to ask for things but if you live in the Savannah area and you have a little extra when shopping, can you buy an extra item for the dogs at the Effingham County Animal Shelter? Everyone who knows me knows I volunteer out there on Fridays. I assess the dogs. Well when doing so there are no toys for the dogs to play with. There are no enrichment features for them. Anyone who know anything about shelters knows that when these animals are there in their kennels day after day they need some form of enlightenment during their day. That is what enrichment is. By having toys or chew bones this provides something for the dog to do and not be so bored. When dogs begin to get extremely bored they start to turn. This starts either for them to shut down or get kennel rage. Kennel rage is not like they attack the kennel door but if left in their kennel day after day, month after month it will happen. They get aggressive when another dog come by their door or eventually could get aggressive towards people. By providing toys and chews they are given something to do and it help to alleviate this.

With your support we could help to provide toys to each dog and we cannot forget the cats too. Cats need something like plastic balls. Nothing that has feathers, fabric and such if possible (beggars won't be choosy) so it does not create a sanitary issue. Cats are more likely to lay in their litter boxes and such therefore their toys will have to be washed and disinfected. Plastic one would be easier.

The shelter is extremely low on dry dog food and cat litter as well. Any brand of dry dog food would be great and any form of cat litter would be fine too as it is all changed out each day. If you cannot get to Effingham Co. AS and live in the Savannah area, please send me an email at dstapleton2003@comcast.net or hit me up on Facebook or Twitter and let me know where we could meet up and I'll be more than happy to take it out there when I go on Fridays.

If you would like to mail anything to them, their mailing and physical address is:

Effingham County Animal Shelter

601 North Laurel Street

Springfield, GA 31329

Thanks everyone,

Tail wags and purrs
